Colombia’s President Urges Exit from NATO

(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro has stated that his country should withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), asserting that the bloc's leaders endorse the “genocide” of the Palestinian people.

Colombia, long considered a close ally of the United States in Latin America, became the first nation in the region to achieve the designation of global partner to NATO in 2017.

Petro, who assumed office in 2022 as Colombia’s first left-wing head of state, ended diplomatic ties with Israel last year, accusing the Israeli administration of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians.

”What do we do in NATO? If NATO’s top brass are for genocide, what are we doing there?” Petro asked during an international gathering in support of Palestinians held in Bogota on Wednesday.

He went on to say, ”Hasn’t the time come for another military alliance? Because how can we be with armies that drop bombs on children?”

He continued by asserting, “Those armies aren’t armies of freedom, they’re armies of darkness. We must have armies of light.”

The Colombian leader contended that NATO remains a product of the Cold War era and argued that countries like his are regarded as “half-members” within the alliance, receiving nominal partnerships without true membership or influence.
